Recovery of woody but not herbaceous native flora 10 years post old‐field restoration

چکیده

Vegetation recovery in old fields towards mature reference states is often limited by abiotic and biotic thresholds resulting from agricultural land use legacies, as commonly highlighted using state transition models. Old-field restoration may include interventions (e.g. planting of vegetation) to overcome these assist between states. However, our understanding the effectiveness limited. Using a point-intercept transect method, we surveyed nine sites, each comprising triplet fallow cropland, planted field woodland plots reflect old-field restoration, degraded state. We compared ground cover attributes, richness woody herbaceous flora species, ANOVA multivariate analyses. found that decade after planting, leaf litter debris were significantly higher than croplands; however, conditions not achieved. Cover logs was similar cropland. Woody species plots, with having more 60% shrub cover, tree richness, plot. In contrast, whilst contributed half plant there fewer fields, which croplands. exotic annual forbs about grass woodland. Our results show active increased litter, trees perennial shrubs. native some extent remained To effect transitioning layer state, further intervention such removal exotics, followed sowing or be necessary.

Sample Unit Selection for Studies of Herbaceous Oldfield Vegetation

The size and number of sampling units needed to sample herbaceous oldfield vegetation must be determined for each situation. Prior to obtaining data for a long-term study of early oldfield plant succession at the Waterloo Mills Field Research Station, Pa. statistical tests and theoretical considerations were evaluated. Of the five sizes of circular quadrats tested, the 0.03125 m size was determ...

Woody-Herbaceous-Livestock Species Interaction

Woody-herbaceous-livestock species interactions have attracted a great deal of research attention due to global land cover changes and increasing livestock production systems around the world. It has been well recognized that many local and regional factors, physical and biological, influence the interaction between woody and herbaceous species. While impacting the dynamics, and tipping the bal...

Conundrums in mixed woody–herbaceous plant systems

Aims To identify approaches to improve our understanding of, and predictive capability for, mixed tree–grass systems. Elucidation of the interactions, dynamics and determinants, and identification of robust generalizations that can be broadly applied to tree–grass systems would benefit ecological theory, modelling and land management. Methods A series of workshops brought together scientific ex...

Restoration of Native Forest Flora in the Degraded Highlands of Ethiopia: Constraints and Opportunities

Wide spread deforestation and subsequent degradation is severely threatening the natural forest resources in Ethiopia. What is imperatively and urgently needed today is ecological restoration. In order for ecological restoration to be successful and cost effective, critical analyses of possible constraints and available opportunities are crucial. Such Knowledge increases our understandings of e...
